Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner dies at 91

Playboy founder Hugh M. Hefner, the pipe-smoking hedonist who revved up the sexual revolution in the 1950s and built a multimedia empire of clubs, mansions, movies and television, symbolized by bow-tied women in bunny costumes, has died at age 91. As much as anyone, Hefner helped slip sex out of the confines of plain brown wrappers and into mainstream conversation. In 1953, a time when states could legally ban contraceptives, when the word "pregnant" was not allowed on "I Love Lucy," Hefner published the first issue of Playboy, featuring naked photos of Marilyn Monroe and an editorial promise of "humor, sophistication and spice."

Tattoos have gone from social taboo to artsy trend in just a decade. With groundbreaking shows such as Miami Ink and its spinoffs LA Ink and NY Ink, television has helped show the general public the high level of artistry associated with ink in skin. But while the stigma that used to be attached to people with tattoos has vastly diminished (according to NPR, about 40 percent of people ages 18 to 29 have at least one tattoo), there still are shortcomings that need to be fulfilled within the industry—the biggest being the lack of recognition for female tattoo artists.
